Big trouble for little people! Flea bites in a child, why are they dangerous, what to do, and also a photo

It is a common misconception that fleas are the lot of dogs and cats.

However, pets brought into the house, insects can cause quite serious problems - especially for children.

And so let's figure out why flea bites are dangerous for children.

Why is the danger of a flea bite for children greater than for an adult?

  1. The child's skin is thinner and more vulnerable - therefore, a flea bite is perceived especially painful, combing and does not go away for a long time.
  2. Children are prone to allergiessince their immune system is weaker than that of an adult.
  3. The flea is a carrier of infections and the eggs of most helminths (about what the danger of fleas to humans is, we talk in more detail here).

How to recognize flea bites in children?

Flea bites can be confused with the bites of other blood-sucking insects, but there are still some features. Let's take a close look at the bite site.

  • flea bites are very painful and cause severe itching (learn how to deal with this itch here);
  • "bumps" with small subcutaneous hemorrhage are formed in the lesion sites, moreover, seals and red spots do not go away for a long time;
  • bites are not isolated - tracks from several wounds are immediately visible;
  • most often affected are places not protected by clothing: for example, lower back, ankles. Typically, a flea is unable to penetrate or bite through clothing.

As already mentioned, the propensity of children to have an allergic reaction is very high. And often even a single flea bite leads to the appearance of skin rashes. This is a wake-up call - it's time to take action.

Next, you will see a photo of flea bites in a child:

Where to begin?

  1. Do not panic! Wash the bite site with any available antiseptic: It can be hydrogen peroxide, chlorhexidine, or even just water and laundry soap.
  2. Important! The water should be cold - hot and warm water only makes itching worse.

  3. Take action to relieve itching... You can apply a cotton pad with soda solution to the affected area, or an ice cube wrapped in a clean cloth. A good folk remedy is to wipe the wound with apple cider vinegar diluted in water.
  4. When a profuse rash appears give your child an antihistamine.

Why is it so important?

As a rule, the allergen is independently excreted from the body after two to three days. But! The rash can be the start of a more serious allergic reaction. The main symptoms are:

  • swollen lymph nodes;
  • temperature rise to 38-39 °;
  • swelling, nasal congestion;
  • diarrhea.

Severe itching leads to anxiety for the baby, he begins to comb the bites, increasing the risk of infection.

If flea bites cause severe allergies, do not take it lightly, leave the situation uncontrolled, or self-medicate. Only an immunologist will prescribe competent treatment and will select preparations individually for your baby.

Eliminating the causes of the disease is the best prevention.

We told you how to recognize flea bites in children and how to eliminate unpleasant consequences. But, of course, the best prevention is the absence of insects in your home!

How do fleas generally appear in the dwelling?

  • they are brought "on their own skin" by pets;
  • harmful insects can move into your home from the street, basement and other apartments.

For reference! The favorite habitats of insects are carpets and upholstered furniture. They also live under skirting boards, in hard-to-reach places.

Their food is dirt and refuse, so remember - order and cleanliness guarantee a healthy climate in your home.

We talked about how fleas start in houses in a separate article, and here you can find out where they come from in houses and apartments.

If fleas are already in the house, it will not be so easy to get them out.

Where to begin?

Start with a general cleaning!

  1. Vacuum thoroughly the entire apartmentto eliminate flea-laid eggs. And never throw the contents of the bag into the trash can.
  2. Rinse and treat all surfaces to the maximum... If you have fuzzy surfaces in your home, treat them with great care - these are the ideal places for pests.
  3. Be sure to wash your clothes and bedding (it may contain bed and linen fleas, we will tell you about the methods of dealing with them here in more detail). Hot water is what insects cannot tolerate.
  4. All pillows and blankets should be ventilated and thoroughly "roasted" in the sun - fleas are afraid of high temperatures.
  5. Treat your dogs and cats regularly (if you have pets) with special flea products. Read more about the symptoms of fleas and methods of dealing with them in cats here, and we talked about dog fleas here.
  6. If fleas appear in your home on a regular basis, see a professional.... Disinsectors will help you get rid of this problem in no time at all. It's better to pay to clean your home than spend money on medicine.

reference! To defeat the enemy, you need to know more about him. What else, besides high temperatures, are fleas afraid of?

  1. Strong pungent odors... An insect repellent - pine sawdust and wormwood - is successfully used by the people. Sawdust can be used to fill a "bed" for a dog, and wormwood sprigs can be placed in different places of your home: at the same time, it will help from moths. If you live in a private house, scatter conifer shavings by the porch.
  2. Cold and fresh air... Ventilate the room more often, hang blankets, pillows, mattresses, blankets, etc. in the air.

We talk about all the known methods of dealing with fleas in this material.
