Popular remedies for whitefly. How to prepare solutions and process plants?

Unfortunately, warm and rainy weather isn't just good for plant growth. Various insect pests are activated, in particular the whitefly.

There are folk methods of dealing with it, but they do not always help, and then chemicals come to the rescue - insecticides.

Next, we will tell you what kind of insect it is, what harm from it. When and why does it appear. And also, what methods of control and prevention exist.

Who is she?

It is a small, moth-like sucking insect, about 1.5–3 mm in length, with two pairs of white, mealy-coated wings. Whitefly larvae find a suitable place for feeding on the lower surface of the leaf, attach to it and pierce the leaf to get to the juicy pulp. Adults also feed on leaf sap.

What is the harm?

This small insect causes great harm to many plants, especially in the greenhouse:

  • pierces a leaf of a plant with its proboscis, can infect the wound;
  • promotes the development of sooty fungi, which form a black bloom and lead to the death of the leaf;
  • weakens the plant and disrupts its photosynthesis, the leaves turn yellow, curl, and may completely die off.

How do you know that she lives on indoor flowers?

A sticky shiny bloom (honeydew) appears on the upper side of the leaves - these are the waste products of the whitefly. Sooty fungi develop on this plaque - they are visible as black spots. If you shake the leaves, a swarm of small white insects will fly off them.

Reasons for the appearance

Whiteflies appear in the garden under the following conditions:

  • Warm (15 ° C and above) and humid weather. If the temperature drops below 10 ° C, insects and larvae die, but the eggs survive.
  • Thickened planting with the impossibility of airing.
  • Soil infested with larvae.

Preparations for the fight

To destroy insects, special chemicals are used - insecticides:

  1. intestinal - enter the insect's body with plant sap;
  2. contact - get through the skin;
  3. systemic - make plants poisonous to insects, entering the roots, leaves and blood vessels;
  4. fumigants - penetrate the respiratory tract of insects.

There are many types of insecticides on the market against whitefly, most of them are systemic, contact-intestinal action.

Important! When using almost all drugs, it is necessary to wear a protective suit, mask or respirator on the face and rubber gloves. After work, hands should be thoroughly washed with soap and water.

Tanrek

Water-soluble concentrate, sold in ampoules of 1-1.5 ml, vials of 10, 50, 100 ml and cans of 1 liter. Price: from 12-15 rubles per ampoule to 250-280 rubles per bottle.

Acts on the nervous system of insects, causing paralysis and death.

Solution preparation and processing

  1. Dissolve the required amount of Tanrec in 1 liter of cold water, then bring to the required volume.
  2. To make the drug stick better to the leaves, you can add liquid soap to the solution.
  3. Plants are sprayed with the prepared solution using a spray bottle.

The solution must be consumed within two days. Tanrek is absorbed within 2 hours into stems and leaves, affecting most whitefly larvae. The rest die within 3-5 days. The drug retains its effectiveness for 3 weeks on leaves and stems, up to six months - in the soil.

Pros:

  • acts quickly, after precipitation it is not washed off;
  • protects the plant for a long time, so you can limit yourself to a single treatment.

Minus - poisonous to humans and bees.

Most whitefly insecticides reduce their effectiveness in the suntherefore it is better to spray the plants in cloudy weather.

On a note. It penetrates inside the leaves and quickly spreads along them, the affected insects and their larvae stop feeding and die.

Solution preparation and processing

The procedure is carried out in the same way as for Tanrek. Begins to act in half an hour after spraying, insects continue to die for 5 days. When processing, you need to focus on the forecast - if it rains in the next few hours, the drug will cease to work.

The duration of the toxic effect is a month. Can be processed up to 3 times per season at intervals of at least a week.

Pros:

  • fast-acting;
  • low consumption rates;
  • insignificant impact on the environment, low hazard to bees.

Minus - efficiency depends on weather conditions.

Fitoverm

This insecticide includes waste products of soil microorganisms. It is sold in the form of an emulsion in ampoules of 2, 4, 10 ml, in bottles of 400 ml and cans of 5 liters.

The composition contains an adherent substance that helps keep Fitoverm on the plant. Price: from 10 rubles for a package of 2 ml to 2700 rubles for 5 liters.

As a result of treatment with Fitoverm, whiteflies and their larvae stop feeding and die.

Solution preparation and processing

  1. The solution is prepared in the same way as from Tanrek.
  2. Spray, evenly wetting the leaves, in dry, warm (20-25 ° C) and calm weather 8-10 hours before watering or expected rain.

Whiteflies stop feeding 6–12 hours after treatment, and they die after 2–3 days. Effectiveness lasts up to three weeks.

Pros:

  • does not pollute the environment, quickly degrading in water and soil;
  • you can harvest the fruits 2 days after spraying.

Minuses:

  • when the air temperature drops to 15–17 ° C and after rain, toxicity is significantly reduced;
  • dangerous for bees;
  • strong unpleasant odor.

Important! Most of the insecticides used against whitefly are dangerous to bees, therefore it is recommended to use them during the hours when these insects do not fly - in the morning before 10 am or in the evening after 6 pm.

It is undesirable to process plants during flowering. In agricultural farms, the use of insecticides is allowed at a distance of no closer than 4–5 km from bee hives.

Confidor

Solution preparation and processing

  1. Dissolve 1-2 g of the drug in 100 ml of water.
  2. Then the resulting solution is diluted in a bucket of water.
  3. Plants are sprayed.

The finished product cannot be stored, it must be used in one treatment. Begins to act in an hour, the strongest effect - on the second day after application. The effectiveness lasts from 2 weeks to a month.

Pros:

  • continues to work even after rain, resistant to washout;
  • can be used in hot weather;
  • not toxic to surrounding plants.

It affects the whitefly larvae during feeding, penetrating the leaves and stems of plants through the vessels, and does not enter the fruits.

Solution preparation and processing

Dissolve the granules in warm water (8 g per 10 L). Aktar is used not only for spraying on the leaves (protective effect - 15-30 days), but also for watering at the root (40-60 days acts in the soil on whitefly larvae). The strongest toxic effect is from 20 hours to 3 days after treatment.

Note! The processing is carried out again after 10-12 days.

Pros:

  • remains effective in bright sun and after rain;
  • practically does not smell;
  • no danger to people and animals.

Solution preparation and processing

  1. The contents of the ampoule are thoroughly mixed with 100 ml of water.
  2. Then it is diluted to the required volume.
  3. Sprayed with a spray bottle.

Only freshly prepared solution can be used. The drug begins to act very quickly - after 10 minutes and lasts up to 6 hours. The toxicity persists for up to 2 weeks. You can re-spray the plants after a week.

Pros:

  • low price;
  • ease of use.

The downside is undirected action.

Benzyl benzoate
