Why do begonia leaves curl and what should be done?

Begonia, regardless of its variety, is prone to one problem - curling leaves. But with proper care, this can be avoided and your flower can be saved from certain death. And prevention will help owners of healthy begonias avoid leaf twisting in the future.

In this article, we talk about the reasons for the appearance of curling leaves in begonias, what needs to be done to eliminate such a problem, how to determine the presence of a problem and what preventive measures need to be taken so that blooming begonia will delight you as long as possible in the future.

Growth features

The key to a strong blooming begonia is systematic and competent caring for it (read about caring for room begonia here). The sunlight on the begonia pot should be bright but diffused. In summer, the flower must be placed on the windowsill on the east and west sides, and in winter, on the south. Exotic watering should be done regularly, while the soil should dry out from the previous watering.

Important! You cannot spray the begonia petals directly, otherwise moisture begins to accumulate on them.

How do you recognize the problem?

If the foliage of the room begonia began to curl around the edges, dry around the edge, fall off, and the inflorescences turn black, then the plant suffers from improper care, illness or pests that have appeared (read about why the leaves and buds of begonia fall off in this article, and here we talked about how to help the plant cope with the problem).

Why does the leaf blade twist and what to do?

Improper nutrition

Begonia should be fed with potassium nitrate or ready-made complex fertilizers Twice a year. It is necessary to ensure that the nitrogen content in the top dressing is minimal, since flower growth will stop, and the growth of stems, on the contrary, will increase.

Humidity and temperature

Lack of moisture and dry air is detrimental to begonias. That is why you should not place the pot with the plant on the windowsills above the steam heating radiators. Begonia should be watered abundantly once a day or every other day; in winter, the frequency of watering should be reduced to twice a week.

Avoid exposing begonia leaves to direct sunlight as they can cause burns. In winter, the air temperature should be + 12-14 ° С, and in spring and summer + 18-20 ° С.

Pot

Ideally, an exotic pot should be ceramic.... For a young begonia, you cannot use an overly large pot, otherwise it will lead to rotting of its roots. A small pot will not work either, because when the plant grows, its roots will take up all the free space in the pot and when transplanting, the roots will have to be torn off the surface of the pot. The difference in the size of the pot when transplanting begonias should be 2 centimeters.

A suitable pot size for an adult plant is 8-10 centimeters.

Diseases and pests

Begonia, with excessive air humidity, can be susceptible to fungal diseasessuch as gray mold or powdery mildew, for example.

  • Gray rot is easily recognizable as wet spots covered with gray blooms on the buds and foliage of begonias. In this case, begonia should be sprayed with a 1% solution of "Bordeaux liquid" or with such a solution: dissolve 2 grams of copper sulfate and 20 grams of laundry soap per liter of water.
  • Powdery mildew appears as a white coating on begonia stems and leaves. To combat it, you must:
    1. Dry the potting soil and ventilate the room.
    2. Remove all areas of begonia affected by powdery mildew.
    3. Spray it with 0.01% Fundazole solution.

You can also treat begonia with a soap-copper solution, only the soap needs to be replaced with tar.

  • Sometimes, when over-spraying begonia leaves, brown spots are formed. In this situation, it is worth paying attention to the regulation of humidity and the mode of irrigation of begonia.

But the most dangerous for exotic is the so-called bacterial spot, because in this case, the plant can no longer be cured. The plant must be destroyed, and the soil and pot must be disinfected.

A sign of bacterial spotting is small watery spots on the underside of exotic leaves. There is also a ring spot in begonias, which manifests itself in yellow-green circles, which eventually turn into bronze spots with a yellow border. As in the case of bacterial spotting, the plant can no longer be saved.

They are dangerous for begonias and pests: leaf nematodes, ticks, aphids and others.

  • Leaf nematode Are small worms up to 1 mm long. When affected by them, light green spots appear on the leaves of begonia.
  • Spider mite... Most often it is manifested by the appearance on the back of the begonia leaf of yellow spots, a silvery bloom with bronze stripes and cobwebs.
  • Aphid... Its appearance can be easily identified by the yellowing leaves of begonia and by the accumulation of small yellowish or greenish insects.

The soil

The soil for begonias can be prepared as follows: fill a little more than half of the pot with leafy soil, add part of black soil and part of peat, add a little sand.

Attention! Insufficient looseness of the soil and its incorrect composition can cause curling of leaves in begonia.

Preventive measures

  • To prevent the appearance of pests, it is necessary to treat the exotic with insecticides.
  • To prevent the appearance of diseases, the plant is treated with fungicides and the soap-copper solution already mentioned by us or "Bordeaux liquid".
  • To prevent the appearance of bacterial spotting, the plant is sprayed with a 0.5% solution of copper oxychloride every 2 weeks.
  • It is also important to regularly inspect the plant for pests for their timely destruction.

If you notice in time that the begonia's leaves begin to turn yellow and curl, you can prevent the death of the plant. You just need to establish the cause of the flower's disease and take the necessary measures.... We hope that with our advice your begonia will delight you with the variety of its flowering.
