Botanical description and history of origin

Begonia xanthina or yellow begonia belongs to the begonia family. Its homeland is the tropics and subtropics of Africa, America and Asia. As a kind of begonias, they are found in the form of herbaceous forms, dwarf shrubs and shrubs, creepers (read more about bush begonias here). The fruit is shaped like a capsule with numerous seeds. The foliage and stems are usually deep green in color. Begonia has proven itself as an indoor flower.

Interesting! As a decorative element, begonia is very often used by wedding florists.

Yellow begonia is a shrub in height reaching 40-50 cm. The shoots are recumbent, the leaves are about 15 centimeters wide, about 20 centimeters high. Flowers are connected in inflorescences.

Description of the appearance and photo of varieties

There are several varieties of yellow begonias that have their own characteristic external differences.

Pikoti

It is represented by large yellow inflorescences with a red border.

Yellow full

The largest representative. The diameter of the flowers reaches 14-15 centimeters.

Yellow ampelous

Long, branching and drooping shoots up to 50 centimeters. Flowers are pure, yellow in color on elongated peduncles.

Ampel cascade

Even longer and thinner, branching shoots with bright yellow flowers. This variety is ideal for vertical wall decoration.

Important! Some lovers divide varieties into tuberous and terry begonias. In fact, they are one and the same flower.

Where and how to plant?

Begonia does not tolerate direct sunlight, so a southeast, or better west, window will do. The pot should be selected according to the size of the root system.

Home care

Lighting

Only diffused lighting, partial shade is suitable. Open sun rays are detrimental to begonias as well as to most indoor flowering plants.

Temperature

It is better to keep the flower in a cool place. However, the temperature should not drop below 15 degrees.

Watering

Yellow begonia does not tolerate both excess and lack of moisture. It is necessary to water systematically, but in moderation. The easiest way to determine the watering time is the completely dry topsoil in the pot. Watering is done less frequently in autumn and winter.

Important! For watering, a settled, slightly warm water is suitable.

Humidity

This plant is very fond of moisture, but does not tolerate the ingress of water on the leaves... With such nuances, a trick will help: you can place the flower in a tray with wet pebbles or expanded clay.

Top dressing

Use specialized mixtures such as:

  1. Kemira Lux;
  2. "Good Power";
  3. Bona Forte;
  4. "Mr. Color" and others.

It is worth feeding with such drugs according to the instructions. on the manufacturer's packaging.

Some growers are actively preparing top dressing themselves. Here are some well-proven recipes:

  • Yeast. They are a complex feeding for begonias, as they contain valuable auxins and cytokinins.

    To prepare such a feed:

    1. One gram of dry yeast and one teaspoon of sugar are diluted in a liter of warm water.
    2. The mixture is infused for about three hours, then diluted with water 1: 5.
    3. This fertilizer can be applied no more than five times a year.
  • Sugar. Plants also need glucose.

    The mixture is prepared like this:

    1. A tablespoon of sugar per liter of water is mixed.
    2. After dissolving with such a top dressing, you can safely water the begonia, but not more often than once a month.
  • Wood ash.
    1. Three tablespoons of ash per liter of water.
    2. Insist for 7 days.
    3. Feed no more than once every 15 days.

Top dressing with eggshells, banana peels, citrus peels and tea leaves is also very popular.

Priming

Used with normal acidity levels. The composition of the soil is suitable:

  • turf;
  • humus;
  • leafy land with the addition of river sand and coniferous soil.

Also, the soil can be purchased ready-made in the store. Florists advise taking:

  1. "Vermion".
  2. "Garden of Miracles".
  3. Fasco.
  4. Respect Begonia.

Transfer

Yellow begonia is recommended to be replanted annually in the spring., since in a cramped pot its leaves fade and become not so attractive.

Important! To definitely determine the need for transplanting, you need to carefully remove the pot from the dried soil and see: if the roots are visible and there are a lot of them, it's time to transplant.

Delaying the process until roots crawl out of the holes at the bottom of the pot will have a disastrous effect.

Transplant step by step:

  1. Be sure to rinse the selected pot. Ceramic must be soaked for 24 hours in water, then scalded. Just wash the plastic and scald it with boiling water.
  2. Before the procedure, spill begonia and leave for 60-70 minutes.
  3. Lay a layer of expanded clay or charcoal.
  4. Pour soil 2 centimeters.
  5. Remove the begonia from the old pot.
  6. Cover the roots with fresh soil.

Charcoal placed on the bottom of the pot protects the root system from rot.

Common diseases and pests

Unfortunately, this flower is very often attacked by thrips, scale insects and spider mites. Treatment with specialized antiparasitic agents will help to cope with the problem.

Breeding features

Reproduction of yellow begonia occurs in the standard ways:

  • cuttings;
  • sheet;
  • seminal.

The grafting method can be described as follows:

  1. With a disinfected, or better sterilized knife, a 10 cm long stalk with two or three pairs of leaves is cut off.
  2. The bottom pair of leaves is removed, the top is cut in half.
  3. Wait a few hours until the cut is completely dry.
  4. Treat the stalk with a growth stimulant, for example, "Kornevin" and insert into the ground.
  5. Form a greenhouse by covering the top with a bottle. Both glass and plastic will do.
  6. Ventilate the greenhouse approximately twice a day. In a month, the roots will appear.
  7. After rooting, the bank is removed.

The sheet method is quite complex, but this instruction will help you figure it out:

  1. With a clean knife, a leaf is cut from the parent plant.
  2. From the main vein of the leaf to the edges, cut triangles containing one or two veins.
  3. Stick the triangles vertically into the ground.
  4. Create a greenhouse, as in the previous instructions, but create even more moisture. To do this, periodically spray the space inside the bottle.
  5. After the appearance of new plants, first open the greenhouse for a couple of minutes, constantly increasing the "walk" time.
  6. After about three months, new begonias grown in this way are ready to be transplanted into separate pots.

Seed method:

  1. Spread the purchased seeds on the surface of the prepared soil, pressing slightly.
  2. Sprinkle with soil.
  3. Cover with a bag, thus creating a greenhouse.
  4. Do not forget about periodic airing of the greenhouse.
  5. After the appearance of two true sheets, transplant into small containers.
