At negative temperatures, the potatoes become sweet, freeze, and at temperatures above four degrees, the tubers can germinate.

But if we talk about average values, then at a temperature not exceeding five degrees Celsius, tubers are stored for about six months... You can also store this vegetable in the refrigerator. In this case, the storage period is one month. If you put the root vegetable in the freezer, then it can lie for up to 9 months.

Tuber diseases

With proper care, potatoes will last for a long time. But there are a number of tuber diseases that can appear during storage:

  1. Ring rot - a bacterial disease affecting tubers. Several soft, rounded, cream-colored spots appear on the root crop.
  2. Dry rot - disease of damaged tubers at elevated temperatures in storage.
  3. Blackleg - a bacterial disease in which the pulp of the tuber decomposes with the release of mucus.
  4. Scab - fungal disease with lesions of the skin of the root crop. Infection occurs in the soil.

Best of all and the late-ripening vegetable is stored much longer than other varieties... Root crops of these varieties are saturated with useful microelements, but for preservation it is better to choose two or three varieties so that the tubers survive until spring with less "losses".

At the same time, it is not necessary to cut the root vegetable into pieces, it is best to leave the fruits whole and cut them just before cooking.

REMEMBER! Peeled potatoes, even in water, cannot be stored for more than a few hours.

Wintering conditions for seed tubers

In addition to eating, gardeners often store potatoes for later planting. Before storing a vegetable for sowing, you need to choose ripe and completely healthy tubers... If the roots are not yet fully ripe, they should be placed under a canopy for 12 days to ripen and dried in the fresh air.

The saving conditions for seed potatoes do not differ from those for ordinary tubers - two to four degrees of heat, with a gradual decrease by one degree per day and an increase several weeks before planting.
